The Court Reporters' Association of Ontario (C.R.A.O.) is a self regulating body which strives to maintain a high standard of professionalism within the field of court reporting. The C.R.A.O. provides a testing and certification process to ensure quality and consistency in our work. Court reporters certified through this Association are recognized by the legal community, courts, private firms and other governing bodies who employ court reporters. The certification examination is available to all members who have been a practising reporter for a minimum of six months and candidates for certification must attend a workshop prior to sitting for examinations. Attendance at this workshop covers the use and care of reporting equipment, read-back and basic courtroom procedures. A score of
90 per cent or above is required to pass the recording procedures. There is a written test covering punctuation, spelling, grammar, legal terminology, definitions and more. A score of 75 per cent or above is required to pass.
A score of 90 per cent or above is required to pass the transcription portion of the test.
Although the CRAO welcomes members using various methods of reporting, the C.R.A.O. Certification Examination Program is designed for reporters using the open-microphone electronic method of reporting. Workshop testing and certification seminars are held throughout the year in various locations in Ontario. Check for the next certification examination date and sign up online now!
The Certification designation of C.C.R. immediately following a reporter's name indicates that the reporter has earned the C.C.R. (Certified Court Reporter) designation through the Court Reporters' Association of Ontario. These reporters have met the standard of testing and certification of the C.R.A.O. To retain this certification all reporters must be members in good standing and not let their membership lapse. Attending the annual conference and workshops is recommended to gain further knowledge and to keep abreast of advances and changes in the field.
